History of RVH
RVH started as Barrie General Hospital in 1891, founded by a group of women who saw the need for a local healthcare facility. Initially, it operated with just four beds in a small cottage on Duckworth Street.
In 1897, the hospital was renamed Royal Victoria Hospital in honour of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. Over the years, it underwent several expansions to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community. Significant developments include the construction of a new 35-bed facility in 1902 and the opening of a new site on Georgian Drive in 1997.
